Exercise & Counting Calories Isn't Enough to Keep You Healthy Today

Exercise and managing calorie consumption are great places for us to start when we want to improve our health and lose some weight (which we are told will help us improve our health).

But these two things alone are not enough to keep our body healthy or to keep us highly functional and thriving in our non-stop busy and toxic world today.

I learned this the hard way after experiencing years of digestive issues, chronic fatigue, mood imbalance, brain fog, and neurological issues all while exercising daily, watching my portions, and maintaining a normal weight.

I also see this every day while working with my clients, and when speaking with women about their health challenges.

These women are doing all of the right things, including exercising consistently and eating healthier than anyone they know, but somehow, they still don’t feel well and are struggling to lose the stubborn weight. 

They’ve tried all the diets and still experience uncomfortable bloating, heartburn, and constipation.

They still have no energy in the morning, fall asleep on the floor in the afternoon, and struggle to stay focused at work.

They find that even the little things overwhelm them, and they simply don’t feel like themselves anymore.

I have experienced many of these symptoms and frustrations on my own health journey.

I’ve learned through my own experiences, and through my training as a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and Holistic Health Coach, that our bodies are dealing with so many stressors that exercising and maintaining a healthy weight doesn’t keep us safe from chronic health issues anymore.

Many of you know me from when I was operating my fitness boot camps or as your BODi Fitness Partner. You’ve seen that fitness and healthy nutrition have been a big part of my life.

But I still ended up with chronic health symptoms.

The beginnings of my health issues manifested as fatigue, digestive symptoms and anxiety.

Conventional health care providers found nothing wrong with me when they performed the usual diagnostic tests.

And, because there wasn’t anything diagnosable, I was told to take antacids or anti-depressants. 

"Ok, so you want me to mask my symptoms and let the underlying problem continue?"

I had seen my mother go down the path of band-aiding her health issues that ultimately caused more complications in the long run.

I knew something was off in my body.

I didn’t feel this way before, so why do I feel this way now?

What is going on underneath it all that we are missing?

Fate dropped a holistic nutritionist into my boot camp class, and I learned from her all about how food and functional testing can uncover what’s going on underneath the surface, what might be missing, and what is present in our body that shouldn’t be.

At the same time, my life coach recommended that I go see a functional practitioner because she thought I was feeling stuck due to my physiology.

As I started to correct imbalances with nutrition, therapeutic supplements, and holistic lifestyle practices, I started to feel like myself again!  Read more of my story here.

This led me down the path of studying functional nutrition and wellness, earning certifications in this area, and eventually becoming a trained and certified Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner.

As I learned to look at symptoms as clues to what was out of balance or dysfunctional in the body, I learned how to use very specific foods, therapeutic supplements, and lifestyle changes to support my clients as they worked to rebalance and heal their own bodies.

As I learned to read and interpret various functional labs, I learned how to identify interferences (like gut infections and toxins) and how to create protocols for my clients to help them address the findings.

Through my practice and my own experiences, I have seen the power of food as medicine. How getting to the root cause of symptoms can prevent more challenging chronic illness down the road.

Most importantly I learned how focusing on these things can help someone to feel alive again where they no longer think about their symptoms.
