This thought will change how you choose the foods you eat

Food Choices

When I went on my first healing journey over 10 years ago, I decided to take a natural, more holistic approach. It was at this time that my thoughts around food started to change.

As a child, I used to view food as something that kept me from feeling hungry, or a way to bring enjoyment and comfort.

When I started working in the fitness industry, I saw food as a source of energy for my workouts, and building blocks for muscle growth and recovery.

It wasn’t until I started experiencing health challenges that nutrition became so much more to me than calories or grams of carbs, proteins, and fat.

I found that it wasn’t enough to just manage calories and portions to stay well in our world today (although this can serve a purpose at times).

I learned that our body needs specific vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, fibers, plants and other building blocks to nourish and heal from day to day life and environmental exposures.

You see a food can have calories that can give us fuel, but it can lack vitamins, minerals and other functional and healing nutrients.

What I learned is that our modern diet is void of so many nutrients that our body needs to thrive.

And then… I heard a quote which has guided my thoughts around food choices ever since.

The quote was by Ann Wigmore who happens to share my same birthday, March 4th (the day I’m writing this email).

Ann was a pioneer in using food for it’s healing powers.

Her quote that changed my thoughts around nutrition was this:

“The food you eat can either be the safest and most powerful form of medicine, or the slowest form of poison”

Let’s sit with that for a minute.

When we put a food into our body, it can provide profound healing properties.

It can contain the minerals, vitamins and chemical properties our body needs to repair damaged cells and tissues, and promote needed chemical reactions for optimal functioning.

It quite literally can be medicine.

But on the flip side, it can also be a slow form of poison.

Foods high in sugar, chemicals, stimulants, hormones, antibiotics, pesticides as well as modified foods and rancid fats can cause disruption and dysfunction in our body.

What's tricky is that we don't feel the effects of these unhealthy food choices right away.  It can take decades for the effects to show up in our body.

Our body slowly degrades over time, with little insults through each exposure.

These “foods” can destroy our tissues, interfere with normal hormone communication, cause chronic immune response, lead to dysregulated blood sugar and digestion, and sadly replace foods that contain real nutritional value.

Btw, did you know that over 10,000 industrially produced food chemicals are currently permitted in the U.S. food supply?

So will you borrow Ann's thought with me?

The next time you make a food choice, ask yourself questions like these…

  1. Does this food item contain a wide variety or concentrated source of specific vitamins or minerals?
  2. Does it come from the earth?
  3. Does it contain manmade ingredients or chemicals?
  4. Does it include added sugars?
  5. Has it been grown or raised naturally without chemicals and hormones and in it’s natural habitat (or close to it)?
  6. Does it contain fiber that will feed my microbiome?
  7. Will my body recognize it as food?
  8. Was it stored and prepared properly?

There are more questions like these that we can ask to evaluate ideal food choices. These are a great start!

If you want guidance in this process, this is something I do with my Nutritional Therapy clients when we work together.

I help my clients identify nutrient dense, clean food sources that give them the macro AND micronutrients they need to heal, rebuild and reboot their cells and body systems.

By doing this, symptoms start to fade away and stubborn weight begins to drop.

Let’s connect for a complimentary discovery session to discuss your health concerns, nutrition challenges and wellness goals.

We can demystify what it’s like to work with a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner like me.  You will begin to understand how simple and quickly we can start improving your nutrition and health, resolving chronic health symptoms.
